Andrew Burford

Clinical Negligence & Commercial Litigation Solicitor

Personal Profile

An excellent communicator, Andrew is very approachable and always puts you at ease regardless of whether he is handling Dental or Clinical Negligence cases or navigating Commercial Litigation matters.

Since qualifying as a Solicitor in 2006, Andrew has worked on a wide and complex range of cases. He is good at building relationships with clients and has a vast understanding of medical processes and procedures, working hard to achieve the best possible settlement.

His flexible approach and ability to absorb and analyse knowledge means he plays a key role in our growing Civil & Commercial Litigation team. Andrew often acts as the first point of contact for clients, finding out more about their issues and trying to weigh up if they have sufficient grounds to build a case, and the best course of action to take.

Some of the most common disputes Andrew deals with are Contested Probate matters, both for defendants and claimants, Property Damage and Boundary Disputes. But he is equally comfortable no matter what task lands on his desk each day.

Away from work

A father of two teenagers, Andrew lives in Sunderland and is often kept busy by the events of family life. He’s a keen cyclist and tries to find the time to jump on his road bike most weekends when he can easily cover distances of up to 20 miles. He also cycles the 6 miles to and from work every day to stay fit and healthy.

What are your main hobbies or interests?

As well as going cycling, I’m a bit of a movie geek at heart and I do love to watch all sorts of films. Life of Brian is a very good pick-me-up movie, but I also appreciate films like The Room, Manos the Hands of Fate, Miami Connection and Plan 9 from Outer Space – especially for their memorably bad one-liners.

What music do you like – any specific genre or artists?

I’m happy to listen to most things – from ABBA to Tom Waites, Hip Hop and anything in between. When I’m in the car, I usually put Radio 2 on as it has a nice balance between modern music and pop classics.

What’s your favourite food?

I’m a big fan of Indian and Thai food and love to visit the restaurants on Ocean Road in South Shields to sample their different authentic dishes. As a keen cook, I also like to try recreating dishes that I’ve tried in a restaurant or seen on TV.

Do you have a favourite book and why?

It would have to be Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy because it tries to give an answer to the meaning of life. But I usually enjoy reading anything in the sci-fi genre – from Lord of the Rings to Douglas Adams. Terry Pratchett is another one of my favourite authors because of the way he adopts a satirical approach to real life situations from our world and take them into imaginary realms. It can get quite farfetched but I like the way he frames things and parodies real life.

How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Enthusiastic, empathetic, supportive, inclusive and friendly.
