Historic milestone as Longden, Walker & Renney welcomes first all-female ownership
LONGDEN, Walker and Renney Solicitors is turning the page to an exciting new chapter after transitioning to all-female ownership.
Managing Director Neil Heavisides has decided it is now the right time to step back from day-to-day management and handed responsibility to Alixandra Cadden-Young and Laura Robinson.
Established in Sunderland in 1834, this landmark move marks a significant milestone in the firm’s 191-year history as it is the first time we have been under female ownership.
Neil, who became a partner in 2009, wants to focus on achieving a better work-life balance but he won’t be disappearing entirely and will remain in an advisory role, lending his expertise to Alix and Laura to ensure a smooth transition into their new leadership roles.
Explaining his decision to hand over the reins, Neil said: “I’ve been a partner in the business since 2009 and it now feels like the right time to take a step back and spend more time with my wife and family.
“Whilst I want to enjoy a better work-life balance, I am still too young to retire and envisage being around for at least another five years to offer guidance, but the key decisions will now be made by Alix and Laura.
“Since joining the board ten months ago, they have been incredibly proactive, setting a clear vision for where we want to be – and I have no doubt they will continue to lead with confidence and ambition.”
Alix, head of our Clinical Negligence Department, and Laura, who leads our Wills, Trusts & Probate team, are eager to take the reins and build on the firm’s long-standing reputation. They will be supported by Clinical Negligence Solicitor Alison Ainsley, who has been a director since 2016.
Having worked closely with Neil on strategic planning, Alix and Laura feel well-prepared to drive the business forward while continuing to provide outstanding legal representation to our clients.
Alix said: “Laura and I have gained invaluable experience as part of the board, and we feel ready to take this next step. Knowing that Neil will be around to offer his insight gives us great confidence. We have a clear plan for 2025 and beyond, and it is very much business as usual.”
By taking on joint leadership, Alix and Laura can share managerial responsibilities while continuing to do what they love – representing clients and delivering exceptional legal services. Their combined expertise, coupled with Neil’s ongoing support, should ensure a seamless transition that will benefit both the firm and our clients.
Laura added: “This is an exciting new chapter which reinforces our commitment to providing excellent, client-focused services. With Alix and I at the helm, we feel we are well-positioned to thrive for years to come.”
